Description

Artane is a remedy for Parkinson’s disease. Its active ingredient is trihexyphenidyl. It is a strong M-choline-blocker. Treatment with this medication appeases movement disorders caused by Parkinson’s disease. At the same time, Artane markedly reduces tremor (shaking of limbs), but it doesn’t have so active influence on the slowness of action, lack of plasticity (stiffness). In addition, the drug has the ability to relieve spasms. Of course, Artane will not return health – it deals exactly with the consequences, the symptoms of severe damage to the nervous system. This drug can be used together with other known means – Levodopa.

Artane is used in case of:

  • Parkinson’s disease of different origin;
  • Spastic paralysis;
  • Disease Little;

Artane is released in pill form. The pills are taken with at small dosage which is gradually increased.  The instruction of the drug reports that it should be taken several times a day – from three to five. Individual plan is developed by a doctor. For example, in case of excessive salivation the drug is administered after a meal. And if a patient has dry mucous membranes – it is recommended to take it before meals.

Artane is contraindicated in cases of:

  • Disorders (delay) of the flow of urine;
  • Prostate adenoma;
  • Ciliary arrhythmia and atrial fibrillation;
  • Glaucoma;
  • Pathologies of the digestive tract associated with violations of the promotion of food bolus;
  • Pregnancy;

It should be taken with caution in cases of:

  • Diseases of the liver and kidneys;
  • Treatment of patients older than sixty years;

Side effects

The powerful effect of drugs on the nervous system can cause hallucinations, disorientation, irritability. In addition, expected side effects are dry mucous membranes, constipation, blurred vision, heartbeat and so on. Hypersensitivity to the active substance of the drug may cause allergic rash.

Side effects

According to the medical reviews, Artane can affect many organ systems, causing adverse reactions. If you notice the following symptoms, it is recommended to consult a doctor: accommodation disturbance, headache, irritability, drowsiness, vomiting, nausea. In rare cases you may experience symptoms of heightened anxiety, impaired memory, consciousness and sleep. Rarely it may cause dyskinesia (involuntary movements); dry mouth, constipation, decreased sweating, impaired urination, tachycardia. The drug may also rarely cause mydriasis, bradycardia, visual disturbances; allergic skin rash. As a rule, the symptoms pass by themselves or eliminated by reducing the dose or frequency of administration.

Special instructions

The use of Artane and its analogues by patients, whose age exceeds 60 years, must be accompanied by regular medical supervision due to the high probability of worsening of thinking and memory during the reception. Control of intraocular pressure in the process of treatment with Artane is required. While taking the drug it may develop drug dependence. The use of high doses, overdose can cause the appearance of hallucinations, delusions, disorders of orientation in time and space. Use caution when driving and performing other potentially dangerous types of activities in the period of treatment with Artane.
