Drug Description

This is a transdermal skin patch used for the treatment of depression. Emsam contains such active ingredient as selegiline that impedes the decay of brain chemicals, which is often imbalanced in the patients with depression. Applied to the intact skin, it supplies selegiline for over a day.

Drug Information

Selegiline looks like yellow liquid. It is a transdermal medicine containing three layers. The first layer is the support fill, the second one is the adhesive layer and the third one includes release liners removed after the use.
The drug includes such inactive components as acrylic adhesive, polyethylene, polyester, polyurethane, ethylene vinyl acetate and silicon coated polyester.
Emsam is mainly used in the treatment of severe depressions in adults. It restores the balance of certain brain chemicals called neurotransmitters. The medicine improves your mood and emotions. This medicine represents a skin patch.
Emsam pill belongs to the group of antidepressants known as monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI’s) that can be useful for patients who don’t respond to other kinds of antidepressants. As this drug is used as a skin patch, it doesn’t affect the stomach.


Apply the Emsam patch to clean and dry skin and press it strongly. It can be applied on such parts of the body as chest, hip, back or outer part of the shoulder.
The patch can remain untouched for over a day and then change it. You can wear it even during bathing or swimming.
Put the next patch on the other place. Don’t wear more than one patch at a time and wash the hands thoroughly after applying Emsam.
The skin patch must not be exposed to sunlight and used after the surgery.

Possible adverse effects

  • Sleepiness,
  • fatigue,
  • weariness,
  • vertigo,
  • irritation in the place of application,
  • sleeping disorders,
  • constipation,
  • dry mouth.

Severe adverse effects are:

  • loss of consciousness,
  • muscle tension,
  • reduced libido,
  • serious stomachache,
  • In rare cases, the medicine can cause increased blood pressure.


In certain cases, Emsam can interact with other medicines (for example, other antidepressants, flu medicines and decongestants). When combined, this drug can cause adverse effects.
