Description

Floxin applies to fluorochinolones of first generation of highly active antibacterial drugs that have become firmly rooted in medical practice. Drugs in this group can be considered as an alternative to broad-spectrum antibiotics. It should be noted that drugs in this group differ in pharmacokinetic properties and specific antibacterial activity. The group of fluorochinolones includes ofloxacin and ciprofloxacin (available in pills and solution for injection).

Floxin indications: infections caused by sensitive microorganisms: infections of the respiratory tract, ear, throat, skin, soft tissues, abdominal organs, kidneys, urinary tract; gynecological infections, osteomyelitis, preoperative prophylaxis and postoperative treatment of surgical infections. Floxin is also used for the prevention and treatment of infections to patients with immunodeficient conditions.

In ophthalmology: bacterial corneal ulcers, conjunctivitis, blepharitis, meibomitis, dacryocystitis, keratitis, chlamydia eye infections, prevention of infectious complications in the postoperative period after surgery for removal of a foreign body and eye injuries.

ENT practice: acute and chronic bacterial external otitis, otitis media with perforation of the tympanic membrane or auripuncture; prevention of infectious complications in surgical procedures.

Directions: adults take it in the form of drip, depending on the severity of the infection 200 to 400 mg 2 times a day. The average duration of treatment is 7-10 days. In case of impaired renal function ofloxacin is taken initially at a dose of 200 mg, then — according to the creatinine clearance (if creatinine clearance is 20-50 ml/min  – you should take 100 mg every 24 h; if creatinine clearance is less than 20 ml/min, it will be 100 mg every 48 hours).

DRUG CONTRAINDICATIONS

Hypersensitivity to quinolones, pregnancy and lactation, age to 18 years. It should be taken with caution by patients with epilepsy, CNS disorders with reduced seizure threshold.

SIDE EFFECTS

Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, anxiety, malaise, sleep disturbance, vision, taste, allergic reactions (skin rash, itching); may develop swelling of the face, vocal cords; a change in the composition of the blood (leukopenia, agranulocytosis, thrombocytopenia) hyperbilirubinemia, myalgia, arthralgia.

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS

It is prescribed with caution to patients with severe atherosclerosis of cerebral vessels, cerebral circulation, impairment of renal function. During the reception of Floxin you should refrain from jobs requiring speed of psychomotor reactions. The slowdown of the reaction rate is exacerbated by alcohol use. In the case of side effects, especially on the part of the nervous system, or allergic reactions that may occur after the first injection, you should immediately stop taking the drug. In case of treatment with Floxin, the UV irradiation is contraindicated.

INTERACTIONS

Ofloxacin should not be prescribe together with antacids or iron preparations to avoid loss of efficiency. Floxin, unlike other drugs of fluoroquinolone group does not increase the level of theophylline in plasma at simultaneous reception.

OVERDOSE

Is manifested by nausea, vomiting, tachycardia, headache, psychomotor agitation; in case of overdose you should stop taking the drug and follow adequate hydration, ECG monitoring, symptomatic therapy.
