Description

Unfortunately, the thyroid problems are quite common now. For that reason, many people have to use Levothroid and other drugs with similar action either in courses or during the whole life.
In most cases, the feedback about Levothroid only confirm the absence of any side effects in the considered hormonal drug.
Levothroid is a hormonal medicine used for the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of thyroid problems.

Indications for use

  • Deficiency of thyroid hormones;
  • hypothyroidism;
  • endemic goiter;
  • condition after resection;
  • malignancy (substitution therapy after the removal of thyroid);
  • autoimmune thyroiditis and Graves’ disease.

Contraindications

Absolute contraindications for the use of drug for differential diagnosis are: acute myocardial infarction, acute myocarditis (cardiac muscle inflammation), incurable Addison’s disease, severe irregularities of heart beat, hyperthyroidism (it is a condition in which the thyroid gland is overactive). There are no absolute contraindications for the substitution therapy (administration of thyroxine, whose natural formation is reduced or stopped). Relative contraindications are: severe forms of coronary heart disease, general atherosclerosis, expressed arterial hypertension (increased blood pressure) and poor blood circulation.
The treatment of hyperthyroidism during pregnancy must continue. It is contraindicated to take it together with thyreostatics. Lactating women must take this drug with caution under the medical supervision and strictly follow the prescribed dosages.

Side effects

  • thyrotoxicosis (dysmenorrhea, diarrhea, chest pain, tachycardia, fever, arrhythmia, tremor, irritability, headache, cramps of
  • lower limbs, nervousness and weight loss);
  • pseudo-tumor cerebri;
  • hyperthyroidism (in effective dosages).

Overdose

The overdose can cause the signs of hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid gland), aggravation of coronary heart disease, diabetes, Addison’s disease (adrenal insufficiency), rarely – irregular heart rate, diarrhea, sickness and insomnia. In the first 2-3 day after the intake of initial dose (3 mg) you can feel sweating, increased heart rate and fatigue.
Treatment
Prescription of beta-blocker, intravenous injections of corticosteroids and plasmapheresis.

Special indications

In case of hyperthyroidism, caused by the pituitary damage, you should find out whether it is accompanied by adrenal insufficiency. To avoid it, you must start the substitution therapy with glucocorticoids before the therapy of hyperthyroidism with thyroid hormones.
