Motrin belongs to the nonsteriodal anti-inflammatory drugs. That means that it has analgesic, antipyretic and anti-inflammatory effect, relieving pain, inflammation and fever. The use of Motrin is recommended to the older patients and the children under 12 years. It is especially effective for the treatment of migraine attacks and osteoarthritis. According to the description, the main active substance of this analgesic is ibuprofen. Auxiliary substances of this drug include: microcrystalline cellulose, croscarmellose sodium, magnesium stearate, corn starch and aerosil.
Indications for use
Inflammatory and degenerative diseases of the locomotor system: rheumatoid, chronic juvenile and psoriasis arthritis, osteochondrosis, neuralgic amyotrophy (Parsonage-Turner syndrome), arthritis in SLE (as a part of combination therapy), podagric arthritis (you should use the quick-action dosage forms in case of acute gout), ankylosing spondylitis (Bekhterev’s disease). Pain syndrome: myalgia, arthralgia, ossalgia, arthritis, sciatica, migraine, head- (menstrual syndrome) and toothache, oncological diseases, neuralgia, tendonitis, tendovaginitis, bursitis, neuralgic amyotrophy (Parsonage-Turner syndrome), post-traumatic and post-operative pain syndrome, accompanied by inflammation. Algodysmenorrhea, inflammatory processes in small pelvis, including andexitis, delivery (as an analgesic and tocolytics). Fever syndrome in the “cold-related” and infectious diseases.
Hypersensitivity, erosion ulcers of digestive organs (including acute stomach and duodenal ulcer, ulcerative colitis, peptic ulcer, Crohn’s disease – non-specific ulcerative colitis), “Aspirin-induced asthma”, clotting disturbances (included hemophilia, prolonged hemorrhage, tendency to bleeding, hemorrhagic diathesis), pregnancy and lactation period.
Take the drug with caution in the following cases:
Cirrhosis of the liver with portal hypertension, hyperbilirubinemia, stomach and duodenal ulcer (in history), gastritis, enteritis, colitis; liver and/or kidney failure, nephrotic syndrome; chronic heart failure, arterial hypertension; blood diseases of unknown etiology (leukopenia and anemia), children (for tablet forms – up to 12 years, oral suspension- under 6 months). Children from 6 to12 months can take the drug only on the doctor’s recommendation.
Digestive tract and liver: stomachache, sickness, vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia, erosion ulcers. Rarely- G.I. bleeding. There were also cases of elevated alanine transaminase and jaundice.
Urinary system: minor haematuria, proteinuria and (rarely) nephritic syndrome. Acute interstitial nephritis and kidney failure in case of long-term use of the drug. Allergic reactions: urticaria, Quincke’s disease and bronchospasm.
Peripheral blood: rarely — reduction of hematocrit and hemoglobin.
The drug affects the laboratory indications as follows:
- Increases the duration of bleeding
- Reduces serum glucose concentration, Clcr, hematocrit level and hemoglobin level
- Increases alanine transaminase activity
- Increases the concentration of creatinine in blood serum
Side effects, caused by the local application of gel/ointment:
- Sense of tingling /burning
- Skin hyperthermia
The long-term use of drugs for the local application can cause the systemic effects, common to all nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
The feedbacks about Motrin from different patients demonstrate the good dynamics during the treatment. It is also used for the treatment of inflammatory processes in the connective tissue with the damaged joints, neuralgia and sciatica. Motrin pills are used to prevent and eliminate tooth- and headache. If the body’s sensitivity to the drug is negative, you should stop taking the drugs. The drug and its dosage must be prescribed only by the doctor.
