Drug Description

Nuvigil is a medicine that contributes to wakefulness. The drug is usually used for the treatment of sleep apnea, narcolepsy and other sleep disorders.
The active component of this drug is called Armodafinil. It was approved by FDA (2007). It is a prescription drug that has a biological half-life of about 12 hours. Nuvigil is released in the oral form.

Dosage

Consult your doctor before starting to take Nuvigil. Tell him/her about all your diseases to find out whether this medicine is suitable for you. Don’t take this medicine for more than 3 months.
The drug can be taken irrespective of the mealtime. Patients using Nuvigil for shift work sleep disorder must take 1 pill 60 minutes before the beginning of the shift. This drug can be addictive. Therefore, you should stick to the doctor’s recommendations while withdrawing the drug.
Avoid using any other drugs that promote wakefulness together with Nuvigil. Pregnant women must talk to the doctor before starting the treatment.

Skipping a dose/overdose

If you skipped the dosage of Nuvigil, you can take it as soon as you remember. However, if you feel drowsy, don’t take the missed dose.
In case of overdose, call the ambulance, as it may cause such symptoms as hallucinations, increased heart rate and sleeping problems.
You should talk to your doctor before using any other medicine to avoid the drug interactions.

Precautions

Avoid taking Nuvigil, if you suffer from hypertension, cardiovascular disease, liver and kidney dysfunctions or muscle diseases.
People who suffered from alcohol o drug addiction must not take Nuvigil.
As the safety of mother and fetus are yet unknown, you should inform your doctor before taking Nuvigil during pregnancy, breastfeeding, or if you’re planning pregnancy.
You should know that Nuvigil may reduce the effect of contraceptives. Therefore, you should consult your doctor about non-hormonal contraceptive methods.
This drug is contraindicated the underage patients. If you are allergic to the active component of this drug, avoid using Nuvigil and similar medicines. Don’t take this medicine if you suffer from skin rash or allergies.

Adverse effects

Common adverse effects

  • head pain,
  • sickness,
  • sleepiness.

Serious adverse effects

  • muscle fatigue,
  • nasal bleeding,
  • depression,
  • irritability,
  • hallucination,
  • pain in the chest,
  • stomachache.

If you note that the use Nuvigil causes rash or skin disease, stop the treatment and seek immediate medical assistance.
