Description

Probalan is an arthrifuge drug, able to suppress the re-absorption of uric acid, located in the renal tubular and significantly increase its excretion.
Significant increases in the excretion of uric acid under the impact of the considered substance considered can lead to the increase of its release from the tophus into the blood that eventually leads to the acute gout attack.
The drug often provokes the retention of excretion of the other drugs, increasing their concentration in blood plasma. This allows using Probalan as a supplementary drug during the antibiotic therapy.
The drug is prescribed for the treatment of hyperuricemy, caused by chronic gout or the use of diuretics and as a supplementary drug during the antibiotic therapy. The drug is not recommended for use to the patients with: acute gout, urolithiasis (especially if the stones are located in urethra), porphyria, pregnancy and lactation, secondary hyperuricemy, caused by the tumors and chemotherapy treatment, hypersensitivity to Probalan, peripheral blood disorders, as well as the children under 2 years old. The drug can cause some side effects, particularly: sickness, vomiting, anorexia and ache in the gums. Very rarely, Probalan causes liver necrosis. The use of the drug can lead to headache and vertigo. In some patients, Probalan causes frequent urination, allergic reaction in the form of high temperature, itching, urticaria, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, anemia, hemolytic anemia and dermatitis. Very rarely, this medicine causes nephrotic syndrome, anaphylactic shock, aplastic anemia and acute gout attack.

Drug interaction

Probalan impedes excretion, and thereby increases the concentration of the following drugs in blood plasma: acyclovir, captopril, sulfonyl urea derivatives, aminosalicylates, lorazepam, paracetamol, rifampicin, zidovudine, sulfanilamide conjugates, indomethacin, ketoprofen, meclofenamate, naproxen, methotrexate.
Probalan reduces the concentration of nitrofurantoin and penicillin in urine, which leads to the decrease of therapeutic effect of nitrofurantoin in the treatment of urinary tract infections, and penicillin – in cystinuria.
Probalan can increase the excretion of phenyl sulfonephthalein , sulfobromophthalein, amin hippuric acid,indole-5 acetic acid; decrease in the urinary excretion of steroid hormone metabolites.
