The problem of hair loss is often a # 1 problem for many men. And the problem can occur due to several factors: stress, diet (prescribed to men who suffer from obesity), Smoking… In this article we will talk about another factor: genetic predisposition to baldness.

Androgenic alopecia may start progressing very early. Already in twenty years young men can see the first signs of baldness. For a long time the treatment of hair loss was not possible due to hereditary predisposition. It was believed that this disease was incurable. Now everything is different.

Propecia is created to treat only androgenic alopecia (synonyms: male-pattern baldness, hereditary alopecia). Approximately 95% of all cases of alopecia refers to this type. The drug is not intended to treat other forms of alopecia: focal alopecia (alopecia areata), alopecia, caused by lack of vitamins and nutrients, and so the nature of these forms of baldness is completely different than in the case of androgenic alopecia, and the benefits of Propecia will be less or not noticed at all.

The drug is available in form of brownish tablet of octagonal shape, and its use is very simple – a tablet is taken once a day and washed down with water. The course of treatment is from 1 to 6 months, so Propecia can immediately be sold in containers containing the desired number of tablets for each period.

While you are taking the medication, it acts. If you stop taking, then the effect will stop. Finasteride should be taken while you appreciate your hair, i.e. all your life (or until you come up with new, more efficient vehicle).

The first results can be noticed after 6-12 months. In rare cases, the first results may appear in 3 months.

Drug contraindications

Numerous clinical studies have proved the security of generic “Propecia”. Another thing, if a woman wants to verify its efficiency. Due to the fact, that drug was created to treat alopecia of male pattern, it can’t help women. Moreover, it can harm the unborn baby if a woman is pregnant.

Side effects

Despite the fact that the safety of generics has been proven, it can cause some side effects. They appear very rarely and very rapidly. Such effects include:

  • violation of potency
  • decrease of sexual desire
  • reducing the number of sperm

Pregnant women or women who potentially are going to become a mother, should not touch broken or crushed pills of Propecia. If a woman, pregnant with a boy, will be in contact with the active ingredient in Propecia, even through the skin, it can cause abnormal changes in the reproductive system of the child. Propecia tablets are coated to prevent contact with the active ingredient during normal conditions.

Why does finasteride not always stop further hair loss?

Finasteride inhibits 5-alpha-reductase of 2-nd type, which is approximately 70% of the total number of 5-alpha reductase in the body. But there is the 5-alpha-reductase of the 1st type, which finasteride has no effect on. Therefore, this enzyme continues to exist in the hair follicles. In addition, if the follicles have an increased sensitivity to DHT, then even a small amount will be enough to continue the hair loss.

It is also possible that 5-alpha-reductase of the 1st type is much more active than 5-alpha-reductase of the 2-nd type in individual cases.
