Revatio is a drug for the treatment of erectile dysfunction medication, intended for the patients with pulmonary hypertension. The active ingredient of Revatio is Sildenafil (it is used for the treatment of pulmonary hypertension and erectile dysfunction). Sildenafil is also known as Viagra. However, you must remember that that this medicine can be used only by adults. It is contraindicated for the children.
An average dosage of Revatio is from 5 to 30 mg three times a day (with an interval of about 5 hours). Clinical studies shown that exceeding the dosage didn’t increase the drug efficiency.
The maximum daily dosage of Revatio is 20 mg three times a day, and the average may cause undesirable consequences.
Revatio injection is intended for the patient who can’t take the oral form of this drug. If you prefer intravenous injections, take them three times a day with the dosage of 2.5 or 10 mg.
The dosage doesn’t depend on the patient’s weight. 10 mg dose of Revatio has the same effect as that of Sildenafil (or 20 mg of N-desmethyl metabolite in oral form).
Revatio may aggravate your condition when taken during the treatment of certain health conditions. To ensure your safety, tell your doctor if you’re suffering from one of the following diseases:
- heart diseases (especially any coronary artery disease)
- recent heart attacks
- renal dysfunction
- hypertension or hypotension
- blood cell disorders (such as sickle cell anemia or leukemia).
Usually, the adverse effects caused the use of Revatio are mild (for example, face or neck reddening, head pain, memory impairment, stomachache and pain in the back. However, sometimes the adverse effects may be severe and have to be treated at once. They include: hypertension (too high blood pressure), vertigo and breathing difficulty.
Patients taking nitrates must avoid using Revatio, as it can cause hypotension.
Don’t take Revatio if you’re allergic to Sildenafil or if you’re currently using the drugs for the treatment of pulmonary hypertension (especially such medicines as Riociguat and Adempas).
If you’re taking any drugs containing nitrates (for instance, nitroglycerin or isosorbide mononitrate) for the treatment heart diseases, you must refuse from taking Revatio.
You can experience a sharp drop in blood pressure, if you take Revatio together with nitrates.
